5TH GRADE NEWS
Updated: October 2008

October is a very busy month.  We honor Mary, Our Blessed Mother, by praying the Rosary each day throughout the month. We will also learn The Memorare later in the month.

We will once again have Sgt. J. Gandy teaching D.A.R.E. to our fifth graders.  D.A.R.E. classes will begin on the 14th.  We are very blessed to have Sgt. Gandy volunteer to teach D.A.R.E. to our fifth graders during his free time.

RELIGION - In Unit 1 we have come to understand the meaning of a sacrament.  We have talked about how these sacraments reveal God's presence to us.  We realize the importance of following Jesus' teachings about living and finding real happiness in God's kingdom.                   Please look for your child's "family time" page to come home at the beginning of each chapter.

LANGUAGE ARTS - We are completing our Nature's Fury theme, which includes 3 selections about different natural disasters.  The students did an excellent job on their descriptives essays!  Next, we will begin our One Land Many Trails theme, which includes stories of early American settlers.    In grammar we are finishing our unit on nouns and will begin identifying and using pronouns correctly in sentences.

SCIENCE - We are wrapping up our unit on weather.  The students are doing a great job working in groups to prepare their presentation, poster, and weather instruments.

SOCIAL STUDIES - In Social Studies, we are completing our study of the first people of our land.  We have studied the ancient people who inhabited North America as well as the early people of the Northwest and Southwest.  Our next unit opens with Europe's age of exploration and the meeting of the people of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

MATH - We have been busy working on problem solving problems, multiplication, and division.  In the next few weeks we are going to shift our focus to fractions.  Students should be practicing their facts every night as part of their homework.
